The Story Behind Mitti & Myrtle

Scent studio built from memory and two landscapes: the home I came from, the one I've made here.
Mitti & Myrtle began with a simple fascination: the way scent holds memory, and how a single note can carry you back to a room you haven't stood in for years.

Mitti - earth, in Hindi, speaks to Indian heritage: the scents, rituals and memories of home. Myrtle speaks to Australia, the landscape now lived in, and its distinctive native botanicals. Scent is the thread between the two.

For anyone living away from where they grew up, fragrance can do something particular. Bonfires on a winter evening. The scent of freshly brewed masala chai drifting from a kitchen. Sandalwood incense at dusk. The smell of earth after the season's first rain. These aren't just scents, they're small, specific memories, and they can return a room, a season, a whole feeling, in an instant. Mitti & Myrtle was built to offer that kind of familiarity to the Indian and wider South Asian diaspora in Australia something recognisable, held onto in a home built somewhere else.

But this isn't about recreating the past exactly as it was. It's about what home becomes when two landscapes meet, which is where the Myrtle comes in. Australian botanicals run through the collection: the bright lift of lemon myrtle, the green resin of eucalyptus, native woods and the dry, sun-warmed air of Australian bushland. These sit alongside warmer, more familiar notes, so the fragrances land somewhere in between, not fully one place or the other, but something new made from both.

Every scent is composed and blended in small batches at our Melbourne studio. Our candles are hand-poured in soy-based wax, and our diffusers are made from essential oil blends, dripped onto lava rocks and left to fill the room slowly.

The vessels come from makers we admire, wherever the craft lives. Our diyas and diffuser bowls are hand-glazed blue pottery from Jaipur, shaped by artisans using a technique passed down through generations. A lot of our other vessels are handcrafted by artisans across India. And as the studio grows, we'll be pouring into jars sourced closer to home, right here in Australia.

Craft that carries scent

At its core, Mitti & Myrtle is about carrying a little of home with you letting old memories settle into new land, until the land we've come to live in starts to feel like home too.

Mitti & Myrtle is a scent studio where hand-poured candles and essential-oil-based home fragrances are developed to bring atmosphere, ritual and memory into everyday spaces. The approach draws on a background in creative storytelling, advertising, food, styling, photography, recipe development — treating each scent the way an image is composed: for balance, texture, and the feeling it leaves behind long after the room has emptied.

The aim is fragrance that does more than scent a room. Something that takes you somewhere, remembered, imagined, or simply somewhere that feels, unmistakably, like home.
